Success Story: Thriving Against Adversity with Support from SOLO and FAO
Sila Wambula Kasawa, a determined individual whose resilience shines brightly amidst adversity found himself grappling with the aftermath of El Niño floods, which wreaked havoc on farms and households in Kilifi County. However, a glimmer of hope emerged through the collaborative efforts of SOLO and FAO.
As one of the 2000 beneficiaries selected to receive cash transfers of KES 10,000, Sila’s journey towards recovery and prosperity began. With unwavering determination, Sila invested the funds wisely, prioritizing the essentials needed to revive his farm and livelihood.
“The cash transfer helped me buy these seeds I didn’t have before,” Sila shared. Additionally, he purchased essential tools such as pipes and a Slasher, essential for farm maintenance and cultivation.
Sila’s compassion extended beyond his own needs, as he allocated part of the funds to care for his sick hens. “I used some of the money to buy food for them,” Sila explained, illustrating his commitment to nurturing his livestock back to health. With improved care and nutrition, Sila witnessed a positive change as his hens began to thrive and lay eggs once again.
Moreover, Sila invested in crop protection, purchasing pesticides to safeguard his crops from pests and diseases. “I got this pesticides too, at least now I know my crops will not get destroyed.” Sila shares.
This proactive measure ensures the security and sustainability of his agricultural endeavors.
The distribution of mosquito nets provided by SOLO and FAO proved valuable to Sila, especially since it was during the mosquito season. Grateful for the protection they offered, Sila expressed his gratitude, knowing that he and his family were shielded from the threats of mosquito-borne diseases. Despite the lingering challenges of flooded farms, Sila faced them with confidence, thanks to the sturdy gumboots provided through the program. “Some of our farms are still flooded, so I walk in it without worry because I have my gumboots on,” Sila remarked, highlighting the practical support that enabled him to navigate through adversity.
In closing, Sila extended heartfelt appreciation to FAO and SOLO for their unprecedented support. “I am really grateful to FAO and SOLO because we never had organizations that came to this specific village and helped us before,” Sila expressed sincerely. He humbly requested continued assistance, recognizing the transformative impact their support has had on his life and the community at large.
